Tie Me to the Chair

Frustrated Woman

Tie me to the Chair by Kristi Butler

Disclaimer:  I’m a day late with this post.  All because of the lack of discipline to just sit down and write!  Irony can be daunting.

Are there any Oliver and Company fans out there?  It’s an oldie, but goodie.  In fact it’s so old that our copy is VHS.  My daughters watched it when they were little.  They are now 26, 25, and 22.  I can still hear those sweet voices quoting Tito (the Chihuahua, in his Latino accent) saying, “Man, if this is torture, chain me to the wall!”

Now put on your best Tito imitation and hear the voice inside my head saying,

“Man, this must be written.  Tie me to the chair!”

Anybody else out there struggle with the ability to just sit down and get the thing done?  Does even doing laundry feel more enjoyable than staring at the flashing cursor?  Or editing?  And editing?  And editing?  Does the random urge to clean out a closet reign over the necessity to search for just the right words to finish that paragraph?  Do you find yourself staring at the phone and thinking, “Who can I call now?” instead of plunging in to the depths of your work in progress?

That’s where I find myself lately.  Distracted by anything and everything.  Giving in to too many temptations.  Running from the cursor.  Just shutting down the program.

So what’s a girl to do?

First, I’m going to pray.  I’m going to ask The Great Author to guide me, to inspire me, and to help me use my time as He would have me use it.

Then I will yield when He speaks to my heart.  I will sit down (with ropes if needed) and complete the task.

I will surround myself with others who join in this formidable passion.  My writers group meets this week!  That always boosts my enthusiasm and fuels my tenacity.  They hold me accountable and encourage me to press on.

And I look forward to Write2Ignite! 2012 where writer friends, old and new, will join to hear messages that challenge us in our calling, to attend workshops that aid in honing our craft, and to meet with those in positions to propel our dreams of publication to fruition!

Then maybe, we can share in Tito’s proclamation, “Man, if this is torture, chain me to the wall!”

Oh, boy! I needed to read this. Seems like my life is running over with everything but writing at this time.

Lord, chain me to the chair in front of my computer–please!

    Jean

  2. Have you been looking in my window? Although I must admit, lately it’s not been the motivation, it’s been the time!

Can’t wait to be at W2I again next March!

  3. Wow, can I relate to this post! Life gets crazy, I get tired, and the words or ideas in my head don’t seem to get on the page. You’re exactly right with the solution, too, though — prayer, and lots of it!

I’ve learned that I can’t just shoot off a quickie ‘please help me’ prayer because I planned to write but then am too tired. It needs to be something I’m continually talking with God about (along with lots of other things!) and asking for His help with every little part.

Still learning every day … :-)

  5. We’re all in this together, friends! Pray for me and I’ll pray for you.

  6. I hear you! Fighting procrastination is something we all must do. Glad you fought it enough to write this post!

  7. Great post! God steps on my toes using the sweetest of people. I appreciate the wisdom in this post – and will do my best to stop procratinating.

I’ll get started on that tonight! (chuckle!)

  8. Jean says:

Thanks, Donna and Carol, Jeannette and April,Leigh and Vonda.

We appreciate your visits here a bunch.

Blessings to all of us procrastinators.

    Jean

  9. Kristi says:

    Girls,
Thanks for stopping by and for your sweet comments! Let’s DO unite in prayer for each other as we seek to honor the One who calls us to write for Him.

    Love and hugs!
    Kristi
