Teaching the Story: Fiction Writing in Grades 4-8
Finally, a book of mini-lessons that takes the mystery out of teaching creative writing to students in grades four through eight!
Teaching students the craft of short story writing is a great way to challenge them and channel their creative energy into a written format. But writing fiction is more than strictly creative it will also help your students prepare for standardized testing and for writing academically. As students move through the process of brainstorming thoughts to writing a cohesive story, they will learn the importance of planning and writing in a logical, sequential manner. In addition, your students will critique their own and their peers writing, so these lessons will develop their critical-thinking skills as they analyze and evaluate.
Miracles of South Carolina: True Stories of Grace in the Palmetto State
Robbie Goodall Boman s new book, Miracles of South Carolina, is for believers and skeptics alike. True stories of grace fill its pages, many told publicly for the first time. From a Providentially inscribed Bible to a lakeside guardian angel to forewarnings, saving voices, and comforting visions, Boman tells of firsthand experiences of faith, surprise, and the miraculous. Healings of the body and the soul are scattered throughout, as are angels, reassuring messages from loved ones now gone, and more.
More Miracles of South Carolina: New Stories of Grace in the Palmetto State
“Miracles don t really happen here. Only in stories on TV, or in ancient times.” Just a few years ago, many in South Carolina had little reason to think otherwise.
But Robbie Boman changed that with her first book, Miracles of South Carolina. Thousands of readers found hope and encouragement in it pages, and they wanted more.

Brother’s Keeper is a humorously delightful story written from the hand of well-known western author and storyteller, Terry W. Burns. From the first page Terry grabs our emotions as James Jackson faces the devastating loss of the family farm. With no way to provide for his aging mother, and his twin brother, Ross, long gone, James does the only thing a decent son can do. He heeds his ma’s request and they go looking for Ross with all of their earthly belongings strapped into a wagon. Terry has the gift of plopping you into the opening scene and not letting go until the last page has turned. Wonderfully written!
Burns took a greedy con man and made me care about him. Amos is typical of many people today, carrying on deviously, and caring only about himself and not how his actions affect others. MYSTERIOUS WAYS shows how God can use even the worst of sinners to get His message across. Burns took what some would look at as the least of characters, an old, blind black man, and made him an instrument of the Lord. Joseph is an inspiring character, stubborn and faithful to the Lord, even when what God asked of him seemed ridiculous.
Mr. Burns stands in a long line of cowboy storytellers, and Shepherd’s Son is vintage Terry Burns. In this deceptively simple story of a sheepherder clashing with cattle ranchers and finding true love in the process, he spins another one of his signature yarns of grace and subtlety. Reading a Terry Burns novel is like sitting around a campfire out on the trail under a sky full of moon and stars, listening to tales shared by the cowpokes in their soft, unhurried drawl.
Beyond the Smoke by western writer Terry W. Burns is historical fiction set in the American Wild West. When Bryan Wheeler’s parents are killed by Comanche raiders, he wonders how he will survive without them. With a few supplies, two guns, and his mother’s Bible, he sets out to create a new life for himself in the western wilderness. During his travels he meets new friends, including an eccentric trader, a Texas ranger, and an orphan girl. But enemies lurk in the West, too, and in this Christian fiction novel these enemies force Bryan to make difficult choices to survive.
