A Brief Summary of Write! Write! Write!

Amy Ludwig VanDerwater's picture book Write! Write! Write! is a beautiful exploration of the process of writing. In twenty-one poems, VanDerwater shows the power of the alphabet, the dreariness of editing, and the endless possibilities of putting words on the page. Her playful poetry uses a variety of forms as she encourages her readers to take up a pen and tell their own stories.

About Write! Write! Write!

Throughout all the poems, the book has a consistently whimsical, but also relatable, portrayal of writing. VanDerwater catches the reader's attention with colorful, unique comparisons. The alphabet becomes a puzzle; writing itself is a tower. Writer's block is compared to standing in front of the fridge when you want something to eat, but nothing looks good. (Which is too accurate!) In my favorite poem, "Ideas (Like Peaches)", ideas are plucked from the tree like ripe fruit. The illustration shows branches full of glowing, jeweled peaches in an image I'd love to hang on my wall.

However, not all of the poems consist of comparisons. Some pages offer examples of writing anyone could try, such as "Thank You Notes", a collection of short poems of gratitude. Other pages offer instructions on where to begin or models the patience needed to write. In every line, VanDerwater gives her audience reminders of how powerful words can be. She shows that writing can be tricky, with hard parts and boring parts, but that in the end, it is wonderful. Comforting. Empowering. Above all, she demonstrates the wonder of books and the way words connect us.

Final Thoughts

VanDerwater's Write! Write! Write! is an excellent book for getting kids excited about writing. Each poem focuses on language and examples that kids can connect with. Furthermore, every illustration pairs perfectly with the words beside them. The artwork heightens the sense of imagination with flying butterfly pens, giant notebooks that act as beds, and storybooks you can step into. The book offers a wonderful read-aloud experience.

After reading through the book, parents and teachers can then discuss with kids which poem was their favorite. This can lead to great conversations about storytelling, brainstorming, or different poetry forms.

Overall, it's a fantastic addition for classrooms or homeschool settings, or simply for families with kids who love storytelling. VanDerwater does a great job of encouraging children to use their voices.
