Book Review: Guess Why God Made the Rainbow

by write2igniteconference | Jan 22, 2026 | Book Review, Picture Books | 2 comments

There’s something enchanting about a rainbow—its gentle arc, its burst of color, the quiet promise it carries. In Guess Why God Made the Rainbow, author Karen Ferguson captures the wonder and wraps it in a story that speaks tenderly to children’s hearts.

This is the third book in Ferguson’s Questions for Kids series, and it follows sweet Lucy and her ever-wise Papa Joe on another thoughtful adventure. This time, right into the heart of the story of Noah’s Ark. Lucy is frightened by storms, and every roll of thunder has her hiding under the covers. But Papa Joe, with his patient love and gentle words, asks her a question that changes everything: “Do you know what the rainbow means?”

From there, we’re brought into a beautifully told retelling of God’s promise, not with a sermon, but through a conversation that feels safe, nurturing, and real. It’s a story that flows with ease, never preachy or heavy, and instead speaks in a language kids truly understand.

Lucy is instantly relatable with her fears, her curiosity, and her joy. Children will see themselves in her and feel comforted by Papa Joe’s calm presence. And the illustrations are absolutely lovely, full of life with soft, vivid colors. Each page invites you to pause, to wonder. It feels like being wrapped in a cozy blanket in the midst of the beauty of creation all around.

The book weaves in scripture naturally, includes memory verses, and ends with thoughtful review questions that help children connect the story to their own lives. It’s a reading experience that invites both reflection and delight.

In all, Guess Why God Made the Rainbow is more than a picture book—it’s a gentle guide for young hearts, a reminder of God’s promises, and a celebration of the peace that follows life’s storms. Karen Ferguson has once again written something truly special.

The other books in this series include Guess How Much God Loves You and Guess Who is In God’s Family. Learn more about Karen and her work at https://www.karenferg.com/, and watch for her guest post coming soon!

I love that the grandfather helps Lucy understand. We keep hearing the kids needs to figure things out on their own. And I get that to a point. BUT … kids also need to know they can and should go to adults for help. That’s real life!

    The illustrations are beautiful, too!
