Consider the Birds: A Book Review (and Giveaway!) by Marci Whitehurst

Consider the Birds by Jennifer Grant, illustrated by Julianna Swaney, is a lovely new book published by Eerdmans Books that utilizes the activity of birds to subtly remind kids that God sees every detail.

Summary

In my opinion, the story hints of the verse Matthew 6:26 and reminds us to consider the birds of the air and how our heavenly Father takes care of them, while at the same time counting to five and back again to introduce five bird species. The simple, yet rhythmic text also introduces fun facts about each bird species such as:

“Two mourning doves scout for seeds on the ground. Friends forever, faithful and true—they pair up for life, two by two.”

Uses

This book is great for ages 3-7 and would be a great addition to home libraries, preschools, and schools. The book ends with a biblical application that church classrooms could also use.

Young children will enjoy counting along and observing bird behavior, while older children could use this book as a springboard for birding in their neighborhoods. How many birds do they see around their house? What species do they see? Children could begin their own bird journals, look up the Bible verse in Matthew for practical application, and write their own poems. (Please note that not every page rhymes, but poetry could be discussed.)

Overall

I’d be remiss not to comment on the stunning art. Each page is a lovely and accurate display of birds with images that will capture the attention of children of all ages—including adults. Each page pops!

The cadence of the text will engage readers, and the art will sweep them away. Request this story at your local library or buy a copy wherever books are sold.
