The Premise
Jennifer Grant and Julianna Swaney’s book, Consider the Lilies, was released on February 10th. It’s the second book in the Consider series, published by Eerdmans, and is a beautiful account of the way God sees and cares for not only His creation, but for His kids as well.
Inspired by Matthew 6:28 and Luke 12:27, the concept of God’s care is woven throughout every page. The words, “Consider the lilies,” from these verses are brought to life with vivid illustrations. Each page consists of a different flower, a corresponding color, and a characteristic about that flower—and it’s told mostly in rhyme! While each stanza doesn’t contain consistent meter, it feels like a rhythmic dance through a field, where children learn about colors and flowers, as well as the consistent love of God.
The Heart and the Art
I’m impressed with the multiple concepts portrayed throughout the story— and you won’t want to miss the ending where the heart of God seems to leap off the page.
Young readers will be enamored by Julianna Swaney’s art. Every illustration is stunning, creating an opportunity for readers to catch a different detail with each reading.

The Takeaway
Consider the Lilies gives children—and adults as well!—a glimpse of the glory of God as seen in nature. It solidifies in hearts and minds the acute care and overwhelming love the Lord has for His creation and His people.
The rollicking text combined with captivating illustrations makes this a book that both children and their parents or caregivers will love to have on their bookshelf. It’s also suitable for Sunday Schools, Christian elementary schools, and libraries.
