Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds (Author) and Peter Brown (Illustrator)

Summary

Jasper Rabbit is NOT a little bunny anymore. He’s not afraid of the dark, and he’s definitely not afraid of something as silly as underwear. But when the lights go out, suddenly his new big rabbit underwear glows in the dark. A ghoulish, greenish glow. If Jasper didn’t know any better he’d say his undies were a little, well, creepy. Jasper’s not scared obviously, he’s just done with creepy underwear. But after trying everything to get rid of them, they keep coming back!

My Review

It’s October, and one of the most favorite books the kids love at Storytime at our local public library is Creepy Pair of Underwear.

I mean, really, isn’t underwear one of the universal funny words for kids? And when you make them creepy, it’s even more fun!

This is another of my favorite picture books. (See my other picture book review for We Don’t Eat Our Classmates.) It’s the perfect combo of story and illustration. The illustrations are in black, gray, and white except for the underwear, which are a ghoulish green. A glowing ghoulish green.

Jasper Rabbit is tired of plain white, and when he sees the Creepy Pair of Underwear, he begs his mom for them. She agrees to buy one pair. Jasper is delighted, but something surprising happens when he puts them on and turns off the lights.

They GLOW in the dark!  A ghoulish, greenish glow! ACK!!!

He tries several ways to get rid of them, but somehow they keep coming back.

Even when he mails them to China!

But when the underwear doesn’t come back, Jasper realizes how dark his room gets at night. He comes up with a fun solution, and the story ends on a good note.

I always laugh as hard as the kids when I read it to them.

In Conclusion

This book is just plain creepy fun. And it’s not the same to read it to yourself. It MUST be read out loud with great energy. The kids at Storytime are familiar with it, but they love it anyway. They get so excited when I pull it out.

For me, the things the illustrator put in for adult to notice make this book even better. Those of us who write picture books know that we have to appeal to the adult who will be buying and reading the book, right?

Creepy Pair of Underwear is fun any time of the year. You might even want to use it for potty training.

Or maybe not.  Heh, heh, heh …
