Journey With Jesus, is a new picture book (Paraclete Press, 2024) for the entire family, written by Ann Ingalls, and illustrated by Steliyana Doneva.
Ingalls tells the story of Jesus during the week of his crucifixion. The book begins with Palm Sunday. Jesus enters Jerusalem on a colt, the foal of a donkey. The story is in simple rhyme but children will need explanations for some of the vocabulary. The detailed illustrations are a perfect opportunity for children to ask the reason for palm branches, coats in the street, and the King entering the city on a donkey.

I love the illustration of the Last Supper. The lighting is portrayed with oil lamps and an oil chandelier. The story accurately describes the scene of Jesus and the disciples who have come to observe the Passover. Meanwhile, Judas has agreed to betray Jesus for a few pieces of silver. Here again, is another opportunity for parents and teachers to explain customs and Biblical history to children.

The story goes through the trial, the walk to the cross, and the crucifixion. Then Joseph and Nicodemus place Jesus in Joseph’s tomb. They walk away in heartbreak and confusion. The illustrator again has done a great job of portraying Joseph in his tallit. This gives another opportunity for adults to explain Jewish customs. Journey with Jesus ends with the glorious ressurection.
The accuracy in storytelling and illustration in Journey with Jesus gives numerous opportunities to teach, encourage, and explain the true meaning of Easter. This book is sure to encourage its readers as it depicts the resurrection and the joy of knowing that Jesus is not dead but is alive to bring salvation to all who believe.
