Red, White, and Blue books for summer reading

Happy Fourth of July! Tis the season for fireworks, cookouts, and of course, summer reading. The library where I work is in full swing with our summer reading program, encouraging kids to read a certain amount of books to win prizes. As I was getting ready to celebrate Independence Day this week, I thought it would be fun to find some books that fit the holiday theme.

So here are five red, white, and blue picture books to add to your summer reading list!

1: Silver Linings by Fiona Woodcock

Silver Linings tells the story of two friends who know just what to say when things go wrong. It's a sweet reminder of how we can find the good in most any situation, and how a caring friend makes all the difference.

2. Lost Cat! by Jacqueline K. Rayner

Fred the cat loves food. One day, he doesn't make it home in time for dinner. His owner is left to wonder, where could he have gone? As his adventures take him farther and farther away, will Fred be able to make it back home? This book is a fun and simple read with a feel-good ending.

3. Take a Chance by Sujean Rim

Bob enjoys visiting his friends, but they all invite him to try something new. The strange perches, odd foods, and new activities make Bob nervous, so he makes excuses and avoids them. What would happen, though, if he just took a chance? Rim shows readers the beauty we can find when we step out of our comfort zones and try something different.

4. Bears Make the Best Reading Buddies by Carmen Oliver

Adelaide brought a reading buddy to school--her friend bear. Although her bear startles her teacher at first, Adelaide soon explains all the ways bears make the perfect reading buddies.

This cute story shows how a kind listening ear can make the experience of learning to read less scary and more fun! The endearing illustrations and sweet focus are sure to encourage a love of books.

5. Blue Sky White Stars by Savinder Naberhaus

I couldn't end without including at least one patriotic book. Blue Sky White Stars uses minimal text and powerful images to tell a parallel story of the American flag and the American people. It's a beautiful tribute to our nation's symbols and history.

What are some of your favorite picture books for summer reading?
