Refuge and Rest in the Lord

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
 He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah
 Those of low estate are but a breath;
    those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
 Put no trust in extortion;
    set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
 Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
For you will render to a man
    according to his work.

Psalm 62: 5-12

Finding Refuge and Rest in Times of Trouble

Where do we find our refuge in times of trouble? When problems arise, where do we find our hope and our rest?

These past few weeks, I’ve been reading through the Psalms, and I keep coming back to Psalm 62. In this beautiful passage, David repeatedly acknowledges that God is his rock and his salvation. His fortress. His refuge.

David understood that the Lord alone can provide peace and hope for our souls. God’s presence is the place where we can find true rest from our weariness. He is the refuge we can run to and lean on.

The world we live in is often filled with turmoil. Unexpected illnesses pop up. Car accidents happen when you least expect them. Air conditioning units break at the start of summer. Yet, despite the biggest and smallest trials that come our way, God is still good. We can rest in hope, knowing that our salvation comes from the Lord. We can find refuge in the fortress of God’s presence, knowing that He cares for us.

David encourages the people to pour out their hearts to the Lord. In the same way, we can bring our troubles to God. We can come to the Lord in prayer to bring our requests and to share our burdens and our doubts. We can come to Him in silence, to wait on His spirit when we don’t know what to say. When we seat ourselves in the presence of the God, we find rest from the worries. No matter what trouble we face, God is strong enough to overcome it. In any situation, we can trust in His steadfast love. He loves us enough to give us strength and peace in every circumstance, from the smallest need to the greatest heartache.

A Simple Prayer

My prayer today is that you would find rest in God alone. That you would stand firm in His promises, knowing that He is the only refuge you need. I pray that you would know the steady love of the Lord, and that you would trust in His goodness and strength.
