REVIEW
Pero Moshe hears a mysterious voice singing from the underground tunnels in the palace of
Beijing, and a prophecy says she’s the one to answer the call. But when she does and is
trapped in the Forbidden City with Dr. Carper, the journey uncovers more than the truth of her
past and not-so-missing parents.

The Chinese government threatens, a charming boyfriend holds his own secrets, and the
Lesaries expect Pero to unlock their sanctuary for a long-awaited freedom. All while eating
chicken feet.
In a desperate fight to restore Elohim’s kingdom, Pero must decide what matters most: saving
those she loves, or the ones she’s learning to forgive.
Forbidden Reign by Amy Earls is a fast-paced story that includes bold symbolism, interesting characters, and high stakes, all of which make it an engaging read. Its primary message is one of God’s love and power and how that works in and through our own lives. The first-person narrative is
immersive and the writing is vivid. I especially liked the frequent use of all five senses in the
descriptions.
This book has a wholesome Christian message, with a special focus on forgiveness and
redemption.
“It’s not about if we’re good enough; it’s about Elohim.”
Carper rubbed his head. “What if this whole thing is no use? Why would Elohim want me
again?”
“I don’t know, but for some reason He does.†p. 164
Pero’s journey showcases her struggle to surrender to Elohim’s will, a choice that has to be made many times.
“It was time for me to release him and find Elohim’s purpose for my own life. Contentment fell
slowly until it settled in my soul. Yes, I was okay to move forward and meet the promises of
bright-filled days. p. 202
Pero grew a lot throughout the story, and I loved all of her moments of insight.
And perhaps that’s what Jehoshua meant when he said to stop running. Maybe instead of
looking for a way out, I needed to look for a way forward. p. 208
RECOMMENDATION
This is a portal fantasy story, which also features heavy elements of sci-fi, including time travel.
There were moments of violence and mature themes. The romantic mature themes are handled
carefully. I’d recommend this book to young adults who like sci-fi and a good Christian message.
