Review of A Turkey for Thanksgiving
If you are looking for a delightful picture book to read to the child in your life, then Eve Bunting's A Turkey for Thanksgiving, illustrated by Diane de Groat, may just be the book for you.
With charming, bold illustrations, the reader joins Mr. Moose and his friends through the snowy woods and back again, on their hunt for a turkey for Thanksgiving.
My Favorite Thanksgiving Picture Book
When I taught at the elementary school level, this book was one I read each year. With its unpredictable ending, delightful illustrations, and sweet story, it always kept my 2nd-4th grade listeners engaged, and surprised by the ending.
Story Summary
Mrs. Moose has a dilemma. She wants a real turkey for Thanksgiving. So, off goes Mr. Moose to find one for her. As he searches for a turkey for Thanksgiving, his friends, Rabbit, Mr. and Mrs. Goat, Sheep, and Porcupine join in his quest.
At last, they spot Turkey by the river. When Mr. Moose tells Turkey they want him for Thanksgiving dinner, Turkey runs away. Something Mr. Moose doesn't quite understand.
After catching Turkey, Mr. Moose, along with all his friends, march Turkey back to his house and present him to Mrs. Moose.
Not What Turkey Expected
I'll not spoil the ending for you. If you'd like to see how A Turkey for Thanksgiving ends, I suggest you pick up a copy and read it for yourself. I believe you will be glad you did.
