A beautifully illustrated board book that points kids to their Creator
“Hey there, orange cat, why do you purr?”
Kids ask tough questions. Why does it rain? Why are my eyes brown? Why do cats purr? Sue Irwin’s new board book, Hey There, Blue Bird, Why Do You Chirp? illustrated by Agnieszka Wajda, helps parents answer some of these questions in a fun and memorable way.
Review
Hey There, Blue Bird, Why Do You Chirp? explores twelve different animals. For each animal, a child asks them why they make the sounds that they make. Each illustration shows the child asking a “Hey there” question, followed by the animal’s answer. Children will love the story’s rhyme as well as the repetition of the “Hey there” questions. The story opens and closes with a Bible verse, and each animal’s answer points children to their Creator.
The illustrations are beautiful! Parents can discuss the illustrations with their children and point out the different objects in the backgrounds. The story is also a great way for children to start learning their colors with the different colors of the animals.
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite illustration, but if I had to pick, I would go with the orange cat. (If you’re also an orange cat fan, check out my review of Finding Harmony by Allia Zobel Nolan.)

I recommend Hey There, Blue Bird, Why Do You Chirp? to children 0-5, and I think older children will enjoy the story, too, and enjoy reading it to their younger siblings. It’s not too early to order Hey There, Blue Bird, Why Do You Chirp? as a Christmas present for the child in your life.
