The Premise
Waiting on a Good, Good God by Audra Haney is an exploration of patience and prayer through the creativity of rhyme and lyricism, complete with stunning illustrations. Join children and their families as they discover that God’s goodness is often seen against the backdrop of time. Just because God doesn’t answer right away doesn’t mean He isn’t working. God is always active in the lives of His people, and He loves to listen to His kids.
The book begins by acknowledging what many of us hope for—going fast and things that make life easier!

As the book continues, readers encounter what waiting feels like alongside God’s love, and you won’t believe the extra fun that’s inside!
The Promise
This book is the second book in the Shine God’s Light series, which includes an interactive element: kids can shine a flashlight behind a black and white page to illuminate a hidden feature on the full-color page! This is a book you can play with—and the play reinforces how we can’t always see what God is doing, but it’s there!
If this fun isn’t enough, each page spread includes a rhythmic romp through God’s goodness and delves into examples of what waiting on Him is like.

The all-encompassing love of our heavenly Father is showcased in a way that is age appropriate and relatable. Kids will be able to experience intangible concepts, like waiting and goodness, through the tangible pages of this book.
Since the author often uses “you” through second person point of view, the reader feels like they’ve been extended a lovely invitation from a friend to join an all-inclusive group. Kids have an opportunity to see themselves inside the pages of this book and will welcome the gentle reminders of God’s goodness over time.
The Takeaway
While the story certainly appeals to kids, Waiting on a Good, Good God also appeals to the child within all of us, reinforcing how amazing our God is even during times of waiting. We see practical ways that God may work in our lives, and it’s done through the lens of Scripture. In fact, this book leans into two verses for encouragement:
Psalm 27:14, “Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.”
and
Ecclesiastes 3:11, “God made everything beautiful for its own time.”
