A Summary of C is For Creation
C is for Creation by Crystal Bowman and Teri McKinley is the newest in their series of bible-based alphabet books. Bowman and McKinley tell the story of creation chronologically as they go through each letter of the alphabet. While weaving each letter into the biblical account, the writers pull out different attributes of God that we discover when learning about the world He has made. The overall result is a wonderful picture book which gives children an introduction to the story of Genesis 1 & 2 while also showing why the story matters.
About the Book
Every aspect of C is for Creation is beautifully crafted. Each page features a rhyming verse which ties a letter into the next event in the story. The rhythm of the text flows easily when read aloud and conveys important truths to the reader. While following the biblical account closely, the writers also chose to include stanzas which focus on the attributes of God that we see portrayed in His act of creation. The readers will find mentions of His power, His kindness, and His wisdom. Below each stanza sits a corresponding Bible verse which parents can read to their children for more context and discussion.
The illustrations by Jacqueline L. Nunez perfectly complement the narrative. Using soft colors, she brings to life each letter with simple but lovely artwork. Some of my favorite illustrations are the simplest–letters embellished with gentle shapes and light. These images give off a sense of warmth and calm that made me smile. When the animals enter the scene, Nunez’s artwork really shines. Adorable ocean life, birds, and sheep grace the pages with a feeling of movement. Nunez also includes several illustrations of Christ, reminding us that the Son was present with the Father and Holy Spirit from the very start.
Final Thoughts:
While there are many books which tell the story of the creation for children, I would contend that there is always room for one more. The creation account offers a foundation for understanding who God is. As such, the creation story is one which should be shared with each generation.
This book gives the audience a unique telling of the biblical account. The alphabet book aspect provides kids with a chance to practice their letters. The Bible verses and discussions of God’s attributes offers a deeper dive into why the story of creation is so important.
C is for Creation is a wonderful addition to any home library or Sunday School collection of books.
